New Adult Sunday School - Study of the Book Gentle and Lowly
We will be discussing the book Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund
Sunday School Class “Gentle and Lowly” by Dane Ortlund Beginning September 10TH, 2023 The phrase "gentle and lowly" is used in the Bible to describe Jesus Christ. It is found in Matthew 11:29, where Jesus says, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." The Greek words translated as "gentle" and "lowly" are praus and tapeinos. Praus means "mild," "meek," or "kind." Tapeinos means "humble," "lowly in status," or "not proud." When these two words are put together, they describe a person who is kind, humble, and approachable. They are not proud or arrogant, and they are willing to serve others. Jesus is gentle and lowly in heart because he is fully God and fully man. He has all the power and authority of God, but he chooses to use it in a gentle and humble way. He came to earth to serve us, not to rule over us. He is our friend and our Savior, and he wants us to come to him with our burdens and find rest. The phrase "gentle and lowly" is a reminder to us that we should follow Jesus' example. We should be kind, humble, and approachable. We should not be proud or arrogant, and we should be willing to serve others. If we do these things, we will find rest for our souls. Here are some other Bible verses that describe Jesus as gentle and lowly: "He has no form or comeliness; and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him." (Isaiah 53:2) "For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:28) "And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:8) Jesus is the ultimate example of what it means to be gentle and lowly. He is our perfect Savior and Lord, and we can follow his example in our own lives.
